I would never feel comfortable taking my laptop on vacation. There are times when I do need to check in on a few things. Do most vacation spots offer internet at the hotel or are there local internet cafes?

More and more places offer internet access (on their computer) or a wifi connection. My concern with using other people's computers (in a hotel or cybercafe) is whether someone has installed viruses, spyware, keystoke loggers, etc... That can also be a problem on wifi connections (but you can secure yourself with a VPN). On someone else's computer your at the mercy of whatever might have been loaded. The risk may be small... but if you access your email or credit card... and they grab the passwords... ! I see more and more restaurants in South America are offering free Wifi.

I also do not take my Laptop with me and I follow few steps to ensure privacy and security. I check with the cafe owner that they have a security system (Anti Virus and Firewall) in place. While I finish my work in the cafe I ensure that I delete all the temporaty internet files and Cookies (after getting the permission from the cafe owner). I think this should help.

We use our cellphones if we need internet access. We take our cells for safety anyways so might as well use the internet on it. Plus we have an unlimited package for internet time. I would never bring a laptop unless it was a must. Many people have PDAs right now. Smart idea.

I prefer to use internet cafes for just emailing and such. No personal information to any accounts i have like banks and such. I like to have my cellphone which has access to the internet so that is useful if I need to do anything eprsonal and i also have a password lock on the phone so nobody can hack [although i'm sure an expert hacker could hack into it if they tried hard enough?] into the internet.

A lot of hotels nowadays has a business center where there are computers and you can check your email. That's what we usually do. I don't want to have to lug our laptop with us everywhere. You just never know when you're not looking what could happen to it.

I agree. I would never take my laptop to the beach. The beach is to enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can check on your emails in the hotel room at the end of your day.
